Rapid Liquid Printing

This emerging technology will allow us to print objects that then reshape themselves or self-assemble over time. Think: a printed cube that folds before your eyes, or a printed pipe able to sense the need to expand or contract.

Cilllia – 3D Printed Micro-Pillar Structures for Surface Texture, Actuation and Sensing

This work presents a computational method of 3D printing hair structures. It allows us to design and generate hair geometry at 50 micrometer resolution and assign various functionalities to the hair. The ability to fabricate customized hair structures enables us to create super fine surface texture; mechanical adhesion property; new passive actuators and touch sensors on a 3D printed artifact.

First topographically accurate lunar globe

Product designer Oscar Lhermitte with design studio Kudu are releasing the first topographically accurate lunar globe on Kickstarter. The project involves the use of the latest data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter combined with advanced electronic and mechanical engineering alongside careful craftsmanship in mold making.

Marble Extraction Process by the filmmaker Yuri Ancarani

“Marble quarries are places so unbelievable and striking, they almost feel like they are big theaters or sets,” says Yuri Ancarani

Moss FM. Fabienne Felder in collaboration with Dr. Paolo Bombelli

Moss FM is the World’s first plant-powered radio. This is made possible thanks to Photo Microbial Fuel Cells (Photo-MFCs), which harness and convert electrons produced by plants during photosynthesis. Moss tufts are essentially used as biological solar panels in this emerging biophilic technology.

Steel Tube Bending

Today, robots can shape pipes however one wishes—and Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner, together with Thonet and tube bending machine manufacturer BLM, has set out to explore the limits of present-day bending technology.

Strandbeest by Theo Jansen

Since 1990 he has been occupied creating new forms of life. Not pollen or seeds but plastic yellow tubes are used as the basic material of this new nature. He makes skeletons that are able to walk on the wind, so they don’t have to eat.

System for shaping wood through lightning strikes by Craig Barrow

A public artefact focusing and directing electrical energy from lightning strikes. When struck the seven-meter high system sends a current down an arranged set of stainless steel forks drilled into a large piece of wood.

Smart e-bike

New urban movement: The ebike is another idea from smart for electric mobility on two wheels with no local emissions.

Cycle by Olivier Raymond

Public transportation has become part of the urban culture. Having increased in efficiency throughout the years, the service now calls for an added dimension, the extraordinary within the ordinary.Cycle™ subscribes to this new approach where travelling is increased in accessibility, efficiency, enjoyability and therefore becomes an experience for the senses.

Valse automatique by Hermann August Weizenegger

“The old Orpheus played his Lyre so beautifully, that he did not only delight the ancient gods, but also made stones melt away. He would have found great joy in a collaboration of a designer and a musician together with craftsmen, sound engineers and interface designers, bringing their talents together to create a synesthetic as well as synergetic happening.”

Ski design, development and testing – Black Diamond Equipment

A massive amount of effort and innovation has gone into their new line of Freeride Series skis. Watch the video here as they take you through all of the the crucial steps from CAD design to prototyping to field testing to manufacturing to quality assurance testing.

The Toyota Prius X Parlee Concept Bike

Toyota reached out to Parlee Cycles and Deeplocal to build an aero road bike infused with the same innovation that went into the design of the Prius.
