Arne Jacobsen designed the Swan as well as the Egg for the lobby and lounge areas at the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, in 1958. The commission to design every element of the hotel building as well as the furniture was Jacobsen’s grand opportunity to put his theories of integrated design and architecture into practice. This work presents a computational method of 3D printing hair structures. It allows us to design and generate hair geometry at 50 micrometer resolution and assign various functionalities to the hair. The ability to fabricate customized hair structures enables us to create super fine surface texture; mechanical adhesion property; new passive actuators and touch sensors on a 3D printed artifact.

Bardi’s Bowl Chair (1951), built through a combination of standardized and artisanal methods

Designed in 1951 by Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi, a semi-spherical seat resting lightly on a metallic ring structure, supported by four legs. Lina was a promoter of handcrafted pieces and of the interaction between Modernism and popular culture. In line with this idea, the Bardi’s Bowl Chair by Arper was built through a combination of standardized and artisanal methods, attempting to preserve Lina Bo Bardi’s craftsmanship while adding Arper technical expertise.
