Domaine de Boisbuchet

Domaine de Boisbuchet, which in 1990 started off with East European students recording and renovating Boisbuchet’s historic buildings. Back then, Ron Arad, Jasper Morrison, Robert Wilson and other rising stars of the scene started tutoring their workshops in a tent in front of the Vitra Design Museum – an activity that four years later found its settled housing far away from urban distractions in the idyllic southwest of France.
We have partnered up with Domaine de Boisbuchet, old innovative design centre situated in a secluded country estate of the South West of France, to tell you compelling stories about its creative workshops.
Boisbuchet’s workshops are an initiative of Vitra Design Museum’s founding director Alexander von Vegesack, who started both projects at the same time. Today, Boisbuchet offers the most versatile and distinguished workshop program on the international design agenda.
In the context of our workshop programme, internationally renowned architects have constructed a series of buildings over the past years that present a fascinating contrast to Boisbuchet’s traditional buildings. Going beyond the purely experimental, today they are used for a variety of purposes and provide practical examples of alternative materials and construction methods, sustainability and a harmonious interplay with nature, landscape and architecture.

Boisbuchet’s summer workshops have become an annual destination for designers, architects and artists who are curious about new experiences in their practice. Each week, world-renowned tutors and the international, entirely inclusive mix of students create another unique adventure.
Boisbuchet integrates innovative architecture and design into the splendid setting of a 19th century estate. They invest in a culture that respects the past and builds for the future, research into a sustainable relationship between the natural and the man-made and offer a creative environment for people of all cultures to share.
