Reinvent yourself, innovate, create new models… A school of higher education in art and design such as ECAL continuously sets itself new challenges to offer its students solutions to contemporary issues while remaining forward-looking.
What skills will they need for their professional future? How can they give them a competitive edge ? What projects, innovations and collaborations are likely to boost their career? In other words, how best to prepare students for working life in multi-faceted professional outcomes? As a State-funded public institution, ECAL has long risen to this challenge with excellence, placing it among today’s world-leading universities of art and design.
With a Foundation year, six Bachelor programmes, four Masters and a MAS, on premises of 3.7 acres / 15,000 sq.m featuring state-of-the-art technology, a joint lab with EPFL and a 500 sq.m gallery, ECAL offers its 600 students from 40 different countries the best conditions to develop their full potential and truly express their creativity.
Relying on seasoned professionals and world-renowned artists and designers, and via numerous collaborations with and commissions from companies and cultural institutions, the students acquire a solid know-how through an enriching, practice-oriented experience. Through its involvement in various shows, exhibitions and events, ECAL also contributes to highlight its students’ works and enhance their visibility.
This wealth of knowledge fuelled by artistic spirit contributes to placing our students in the limelight, but also to putting our region and country on the map – a place driven by know-how and innovation, where creation is synonymous with passion!
Enjoying international renown and featuring regularly among the world’s top ten universities of art and design, ECAL is directed by Alexis Georgacopoulos. The school currently offers programmes (a Foundation Year, 6 Bachelor, 4 Master, a MAS) in the following fields: Fine Arts, Cinema, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Photography, Media & Interaction Design.
ECAL has grown consistently in terms of student numbers (581 at the beginning of the 2014–2015 academic year) and above all its presence on the international scene. Its influence in Europe and throughout the world is reflected by numerous press articles, regular mentions in specialist and large-circulation publications, and an enviable number of exhibitions in prestigious venues such as Centre Culturel Suisse (Paris), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Cooper Union (New York), Designers’ Saturday Langenthal, Design Days Dubai, Design Parade (Hyères), Design September Brussels, documenta (Kassel), Droog Design Gallery (Amsterdam), Gallery Libby Sellers (London), National Institute of Design Ahmedabad, Salone internazionale del Mobile (Milan) or swissnex (San Francisco, Boston, Shanghai)…
Over the years the ECAL has significantly increased the number of its collaborative projects with universities of art and design around the world and with leading firms active in a wide range of sectors like Alessi, Audemars Piguet, Baccarat, BCV, Bernardaud, Cassina, Christofle, DuPont, ewo, Felco, Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, Galeries Lafayette, Hansgrohe Axor, Hermès, Hublot, Nestlé, Nespresso, Rado, SIGG, Swarovski, Swiss International Air Lines, Vitra, Wenger, Zai Ski…
Thanks to the network established at ECAL and by producing a portfolio to the highest professional standards, once they complete their studies our graduates have the choice of working for renowned companies or immediately setting up their own studios.
