Kitchen machines with an alternative drive concept. R2B2 is the result of a project to reduce private electric waste production. There are three different kitchen appliances, which are powered by rotating a flywheel with muscular strength.

Electricity is not necessary anymore. Wide user studies showed, that a kitchen machine, a coffee grinder and a hand blender are the most needed driven appliances. They all can be placed in the container. A lot of other features are possible to power. All products and pieces are designed by including user studies under the topics long life, high functionality, easy cleaning, easy demounting and high quality look.

The shown flywheel makes the technique easy to understand. With the pedal it is possible to power the machine up to 400rpm. That gives 350W energy for the duration of about one minute. That is enough for most of the daily works in the kitchen. At the front side you can find a switch. There you can decide for different works between the slow front connexion, a fast connexion at the back side or a neutral gear. The functional aesthetics of a joinery workshop was the inspiration during the formfinding process.

One criteria to choose the attachments was the possibility to do as many different jobs with as less as possible parts.

The kitchen machine is laid out for four people. For the multifunctional use there are blades, a whip and different adapters for cutting discs. To clean the machine you can easily reassamble the axle from the bowl. The hand blender can be used for different works by attaching different tops. A flexible shaft leads the rotation noiseless to the handheld and powers a blender, an egg or a cappuccino creamer. The transmission makes a speed up to 10.000 rpm possible. The hand blender can be stored on a holder on the bottom end of the shaft for daily use. It can be used for different works by attaching different tops. The coffee grinder is storage and mill at once. The bean container and the powder container are made out of glass. There is room for 300g of beans and 10 spoons of powder. The main part of the mill with the grinder is made out of porcelain and closes the whole coffee grinder aroma-tight. It is possible to grind beans for 10 cups of coffee at once. The big opening of the glasses guarantees easy excess to clean. The main part of the transportation and selling packaging can be used to store the attachments in the container. All attachments will be sold seperately. That means that you can buy just the parts you need. By building different functional models parallel to the user studies and the analysis of needs it was possible to design the perfect form and place for the driving unit. To optimize and control the concept it was necessary to built another model. The method case shows you some pictures, drawings and mock up of this project. Enjoy it!
