Akari Light Sculptures (1951)

Akari Light Sculptures by Isamu Noguchi are considered icons of 1950s modern design. Designed by Noguchi beginning in 1951 and handmade for a half century by the original manufacturer in Gifu, Japan, the paper lanterns are a harmonious blend of Japanese handcraft and modernist form. The lamps are created from handmade washi paper and bamboo ribbing, supported by a metal frame.

‘May day’ portable lamp, by Konstantin Grcic for FLOS

Konstantin designed the Mayday lamp to be a tool. It has a practical handle which incorportates the on/off switch and two spikes to wind up the 5 meter long cable. A big hook on the end of the handle comes in helpful to install the lamp wherever needed. The big white funnel is at the same time reflector and protector. Its smooth polypropylen plastic gives off a warmly diffused light and is strong enough to absorbe any bashing.

A lamp inspired by the Portuguese roofs

Roof tiles is a lamp inspired by the Portuguese roofs. The metal sheet is bend and covered with Burel felt worked in order to make reference to the roof tiles, recreating the comfort and protection roofs offers to buildings.

Collar, a table lamp by Kutarq and Nordic Tales

MYX – Mycelium Textile Project by Jonas Edvard

The lamps consist of plant fibre and mushroom-mycelium. The lamps are grown into the shape during a period of 2 weeks, where the mushroom eats and grows together the plant fibres into a flexible and soft living textile.

ROPE TRICK by Stefan Diez and Wrong for Hay

Stefan Diez Studio is currently working on a family of LED lamps for domestic and contract use. Rope Trick Floor lamp is powered by a dimmable, 11W/1080 lumen LED chip and available from 2014 onwards for about 340€.

Trace, Recycling solar energy as ambient light by Gionata Gatto and Mike Thompson

Gionata Gatto of Studio Atuppertu and Mike Thompson combined photoluminescent pigments with polyurethane to make “Trace”. The outdoor lamp series convert waste energy into visible light.

Dama by Tom Allen

Dama is a table lamp designed by Tom Allen for Spanish eco-design company Lucirmás. Made from upcycled, recyclable and sustainably certified materials, the lamp was first previewed at the Salon Internazionale del Mobile in Milan 2012 at Superstudio Piú but has now been officially launched.

Pleat Box by Apparatu & Mashallah

The idea behind the Pleat Box is that of a sophisticated combination between a digitally-designed crease in a piece of cloth, the silhouette of which is applied to a ceramic base.
The outer part of the lamp is offered in white ceramic, underglazed red clay and grey –the result of recycling different enamels.
