The Revitalizer by Merve Kahraman

Merve Kahraman (born in 1987) studied Interior Design at the Istituto Europeo di Design (Milan/Italy) before moving to London. Since graduating, she has worked in several architecture and design studios in Istanbul, New York and London. Her decision to specialize in industrial design stems from her desire to include furniture and products as an integral part of her designs for spaces. Recently, she has completed her masters education in Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London/UK) and is working on her own industrial design and interior design projects.
The Revitalizer is a wax-lamp that re-creates itself over time, allowing its owner to re-use it and observe the growing-old, dying and rebirth cycle of the lamp. The high voltage bulb inside the lamp melts the wax slowly and after all the wax melts down into the cup, the heat resistance inside the core helps the wax to create a new mould. Once the wax cools down and take its shape, the user can take it out and replace it into the top part of the lamp. The soft lamp shade that revitalizer gives out and various shapes it forms while melting, creates surprise and feeling of relaxation.
Hypothesis: Objects that are open to interpretation and have the potential of developing in different ways acquire memories and emotional attachment over time. How can design promote this bond between objects and their users and thus prolong their relationship allowing them to grow old together?
This project is motivated by a desire to create solutions to the negative effects of obsolescence, excessive consumerism, technology and lack of emotional attachment between users and their products. “Grow Old Series” consists of objects that have the ability to transform and recreate themselves, representing cycles.
The alternative version of the Revitalizer is made of American walnut and white painted aluminium tray at the bottom. This verson includes a dimmer to arrange the intensity of the light and a heater with a temperature controller to recast the wax more easier. Different wood finishes and colors are available upon request.
